Old Pictures of Cumbria

Cumbria lies in the north western part of England. Home to The Lake District, the area is a major tourist attraction for visitors from all over the world and it contains some of the most beautiful natural landscape in England.
Dominated by mountains and freshwater lakes, Cumbria draws millions of visitors every year. People come to the Lake District to enjoy the spectacular scenery and excellent outdoor pursuits. From lake cruises on Windermere to hiking through the Lake District National Park, there is plenty to see and do in Cumbria.

Sports and outdoor leisure activities are a big draw for visitors to Cumbria. The area contains some of the highest peaks in the north of England and as well as hiking and hill walking, lots of people enjoy rock climbing, mountain biking, and pony trekking. With such spectacular scenery, Cumbria is a photographer’s dream location.
There is also plenty of history to enjoy while in Cumbria. The historic city of Carlisle is only eight miles from the border of Scotland and Carlisle Castle has been the centre of a number of important battles between the English and the Scots over the centuries. In the southern part of Cumbria lies Furness Abbey. It was once one of the richest Cistercian monasteries in England and today visitors can enjoy guided tours of what remains of this impressive abbey.
Western Cumbria has other attractions that are well worth a visit, including Muncaster Castle, widely reputed to be the most haunted house in the United Kingdom. As well as containing ghosts and other members of the spirit world, the castle is also home to the World Owl Centre, a Himalayan Garden, and the Meadowvole Maze.
One of the most famous former residents of Cumbria is Beatrix Potter and a museum devoted to her life and work can be found in the town of Bowness, situated on Lake Windermere. Children will love seeing the iconic tales of Peter Rabbit and his many friends brought to life by way of sights, sounds, and smells.
The Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole offers the chance to enjoy some wonderful gardens and interactive exhibitions about the history and geography of the Lake District and surrounding area. The Aquarium on the Lakes explores the watery aspects of the Lake District and contains the largest collection of freshwater fish in the United Kingdom.
With so many great places to visit and activities to enjoy, Cumbria is a fantastic place for a holiday all year round.
