The rapid increase in the railway network during the Victorian era had a big impact on British society. By the 1850s the railway network had spread over large parts of Great Britain carrying raw materials, finished goods and people quickly and cheaply around the country.
The network continued to expand during Queen Victoria’s reign and many resorts flourished as increasing numbers of Victorian tourists took the train to go on their holidays. Competing railway companies would often use posters to advertise their services, and promote holiday resorts around the country. These vintage posters can be very colourful and attractive.
